Fiber strategies for GLP-1 innovation

by amazonskylers

In the realm of GLP-1 medications, the number of consumers is expected to rise steadily in the coming years. A webinar by FleishmanHillard revealed that currently, 12% of US adults have tried a GLP-1 drug, with an anticipated increase to 25% by 2026, led by Gen Z at 37%. By 2030, it is projected that 35% of US households will have at least one individual using GLP-1 medications, as reported by FleishmanHillard.

FleishmanHillard categorizes the GLP-1 journey into various phases, including pre-medication, initiation, stabilization, maintenance, plateau, discontinuation, and post-medication.

Kristie Sigler, a senior partner at FleishmanHillard, described GLP-1 users as a diverse group, akin to a kaleidoscope, rather than a homogenous entity.

Allison Koch, a registered dietitian at FleishmanHillard, emphasized the evolving nutritional needs of consumers across different phases of their GLP-1 medication journey.

When it comes to formulating with fiber, Christine Nowakowski from Cargill highlighted the importance of selecting the right type and amount of fiber for specific purposes, categorizing them into soluble and insoluble fibers.

For consumers using GLP-1 medications, managing fiber intake is crucial, especially during the early stages to avoid digestive discomfort and side effects.

As users progress through their medication journey, gradual increases in fiber intake are recommended, alongside a focus on nutrient-dense foods and smaller portions.

Consumers who discontinue GLP-1 medications may fall into different categories, with some seeking ways to maintain progress while others may return to medication use, leading to the emergence of a segment known as ‘boomerangers.’

Incorporating plant-based ingredients rich in fiber and protein can be beneficial for users of GLP-1 medications, offering clean label options for various food products.
