WK Kellogg Co is revolutionizing the way consumers view cereal with a new nutrition guide featured on the packaging of products like Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes. The tool, known as SPOONS, aims to provide consumers with quick and informed choices in the cereal aisle.

The SPOONS acronym, representing simple ingredients (S), protein (P), outstanding fiber (O), other nutritious foods, nutrients you need (N), and single-digit sugars (S), will be incorporated into classic Kellogg’s brands such as All-Bran, Corn Flakes, Frosted Mini-Wheats, Raisin Bran, and Rice Krispies across the U.S.

The SPOONS framework will be gradually added to the back of cereal packages over the coming year.

Changing Perceptions of Cereal

As consumer preferences shift towards simple, high-nutrition foods focusing on fiber and protein, Kellogg’s is aiming to reintroduce cereal as a beloved and trusted food choice. Sarah Ludmer, Kellogg’s chief wellbeing and sustainable business officer, designed SPOONS to cater to this evolving consumer demand.

Consumers are increasingly conscious of their dietary choices, prioritizing ingredients like protein and fiber while reducing sugar and artificial additives. In response, companies are under pressure to make nutrition information more accessible, with initiatives like front-of-pack labeling and tools like SmartLabel enabling consumers to access product data easily.

Kellogg’s decision to implement its own on-pack nutritional label reflects a broader effort to reshape the narrative around cereal, which has faced declining demand due to changing consumer perceptions.

Research conducted by WK Kellogg revealed that many cereal users are unaware of the natural sources of fiber and essential nutrients found in cereals. The company emphasizes that cereals are made from simple ingredients and contain less added sugar than commonly believed.

For instance, a package of Raisin Bran highlights its fiber content of 7 grams per serving, along with 5 grams of protein. The SPOONS label includes a QR code for consumers to learn more about the nutritional framework and benefits of consuming cereal.

Cereal manufacturers are innovating by offering products with reduced sugar content and increased nutritional value, such as fiber and protein. Startups like Magic Spoon and established brands like General Mills are introducing sugar-free and protein-rich cereal options to cater to evolving consumer preferences.

Kellogg’s has also entered the better-for-you cereal market with products like Eat Your Mouth Off, boasting 22 grams of protein and zero grams of sugar per serving. Additionally, the company has launched Kashi Gut Health and Frosted Flakes with 25% less sugar, aligning with the trend towards healthier breakfast options.
