The bread cooks with butter, celery, onion, herbs, broth, and eggs until it’s tender and flavorful. Once it’s finished cooking, you can switch the slow cooker to warm and keep it ready until everyone is at the table.

Is it really necessary to dry out or bake the bread ahead of time for stuffing?

Absolutely, if you want your stuffing to have the right texture. If there’s too much moisture left in the bread, it will be chewy and tough. If you don’t have time for this extra step, see if you can buy day-old bread from the bakery.

Could you make this with all white bread or all wheat, instead of half of each?

Any kind of bread should work, as long as it’s nice and dry.

If the stuffing done before the bird, can you leave it in the Crockpot until the rest of the meal is ready?

No problem! Just set your Crockpot on the “warm” setting until dinner is served.

  • Unsalted butter: Adds richness and is used to cook the vegetables and herbs.
  • Celery: Gives the stuffing its classic flavor and a little texture.
  • Onion: Adds savory flavor throughout the stuffing.
  • Fresh parsley: Adds a fresh herb flavor.
  • White bread cubes: Half of the bread base for the stuffing.
  • Wheat bread cubes: Adds a little more texture and flavor alongside the white bread.
  • Poultry seasoning: A classic seasoning blend that works perfectly in holiday stuffing.
  • Dried sage: One of the main flavors people associate with traditional stuffing.
  • Dried thyme: Adds an earthy herb flavor.
  • Dried rosemary: Adds another savory herb note.
  • Dried marjoram: Rounds out the seasoning blend.
  • Salt and pepper: Season the bread and vegetables.
  • Chicken broth: Moistens the dried bread. The amount you need can vary depending on the type of bread you use.

Easy Crockpot Stuffing

  1. Start by melting your butter in a skillet and then add in your onions, celery and all of your seasonings. Cook until softens, but not browned. Once done cooking, place them in a large mixing bowl and allow to completely cool.
  2. Once the veggies cool down, add in your bread cubes. Next pour in your eggs.
  3. Now you are going to add your broth. NOTE: Too much leads to a very wet stuffing, too little and it will be dry. You just want your bread moist. If you do add too much, it’s okay just add more bread. For the sandwich bread I picked, I barely needed 2 cups of broth. If you picked a harder crustier bread you will need more.
  4. Pour your stuffing into a well-greased crockpot and cook on LOW for 4 hours.
