Mondelēz takes big bite of premium cookie market with Tate’s

With Mondelēz International at the helm, Tate’s Bake Shop is dominating the chocolate chip cookie market, appealing to consumers seeking premium indulgences in an uncertain economy.

Acquired by Mondelēz in 2018 for approximately $500 million, Tate’s has become a cornerstone of the company’s snacking portfolio, differentiating itself from mainstream brands like Chips Ahoy! and Oreo. Mondelēz has since expanded its offerings with the acquisitions of Clif Bar, Hu, and Perfect Snacks.

Known for its premium quality, Tate’s success can be attributed to its roots in Southampton, New York, and its commitment to simple, in-demand ingredients like brown sugar and butter.

Despite its modest size compared to Mondelēz’s massive revenue of $38.5 billion, Tate’s is seen as a strategic asset for further growth in the snacking sector.

The rise in demand for premium snacks reflects a shift towards affordable luxuries, with consumers valuing higher-quality ingredients and superior taste. According to Circana data released in April, premium and super-premium offerings are gaining market share as consumers are willing to pay more for perceived value.

“There is a lot more potential for growth with Tate’s,” said Jennifer Hull, head of marketing. “It complements the rest of our portfolio nicely.”

Currently holding a 2% share of the $11.2 billion sweet cookie market, Tate’s is experiencing mid-single-digit annual growth, outpacing the overall cookie category by 2.5 times in 2025, according to Mondelēz.

Popular on both the West and East coasts, Tate’s presents Mondelēz with ample opportunities to expand its market share across the U.S. The brand is focusing on innovation to attract new customers, introducing products like gluten-free cookies and limited-time flavors such as key lime pie and pumpkin spice.

Looking ahead, Mondelēz envisions expanding Tate’s beyond cookies to include a range of indulgent treats sold at its flagship Southampton bake shop, including brownies, cakes, and muffins.

“The bake shop is a treasure trove of possibilities,” Hull noted. “There are countless ideas waiting to be explored. It’s all about timing and maintaining the brand’s integrity.”
