Sam Adams channels Revolutionary Era with America 250 beer

Boston Beer’s Samuel Adams is commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States by delving into the country’s inception.

The beer brand named after the Founding Father is reintroducing the Brewer Patriot collection, a special edition four-pack featuring brews crafted with ingredients inspired by the 1770s. The flavors include porter, hard root beer, dark wheat ale, and honey ginger ale.

Shelley Smith, Samuel Adams’ master cicerone, expressed that the distinctive flavors pay homage to the rebellious spirit upon which the Sam Adams brewery was established. The pack was originally unveiled in 2006.

“That independent spirit truly motivated [Sam Adams’ Founder] Jim Koch to challenge the prevailing beer options at that time, predominantly mass-produced and domestic beers, and strive to introduce diverse flavor profiles,” Smith remarked.

Each alcoholic beverage draws inspiration from a Founding Father and pays tribute to the history of craft beer during the nation’s inception. According to Boston Beer, Thomas Jefferson and his wife brewed 15 gallons of beer every two weeks at their estate. James Madison advocated for establishing a national brewery, while George Washington crafted his own beer recipes at home.

The patriot pack contains ingredients uncommon in modern craft beer selections, such as molasses and licorice root. These elements were popular in the 1700s as they were readily available, with some believed to offer health benefits and medicinal properties.

The beers also boast a subtle smoky essence, as malts were traditionally dried using fire rather than the contemporary kilns in use today, Smith detailed.

“Revisiting the ingredients that would have been utilized in beers from that era and reintroducing them, even though they may not align with typical beer offerings on shelves today, is quite enjoyable,” Smith added.

America’s 250th anniversary has spurred a surge of patriotic innovations in the food and beverage realm, with various beer giants also marking the occasion, including Yuengling and Budweiser.

In addition to the Patriot Pack, Samuel Adams is launching a Star-Spangled variety pack for the 250th anniversary. This pack showcases four of its classic summer flavors in special packaging, including summer ale, blueberry lager, American light lager, and Porch Rocker, a lemon radler.

When discussing innovation, Smith highlighted the brewery’s focus on meeting consumer preferences, which lean towards low- and no-alcohol beverages, as well as high alcohol content exceeding 9%. Fruit-forward beers are also in demand, a trend that the Star-Spangled variety pack caters to.

“Our aim is to drive innovation and consider what today’s consumers are seeking, while providing a unique experiential opportunity,” Smith emphasized.
