Meijer ramps up private label to cater to nutrition trends

As the demand for GLP-1s and other nutritional trends continues to grow, Meijer is adapting its private label offerings to cater to specific dietary requirements.

The retailer announced on Thursday that over 120 of its exclusive products contain at least 5 grams of fiber per serving, with 20 of them falling under the True Goodness by Meijer brand. Additionally, more than 700 private label items have at least 10 grams of protein per serving, including 300 under the Fresh from Meijer brand and 250 under the Meijer name brand.

Meijer plans to introduce more protein-rich private label products this year, such as sesame protein pasta salad under the Frederik’s by Meijer line, protein puff snacks under the Meijer name brand, and grass-fed and finished double smoked beef sticks under True Goodness by Meijer.

The announcement also featured product recommendations from Meijer’s dietitians, including the Meijer name-brand whole wheat pasta and True Goodness organic black beans.

“At Meijer, we strive to offer our customers options that support their health goals while being budget-friendly, and these products are designed to do just that,” said Don Sanderson, Meijer’s Chief Merchandising and Marketing Officer.

Meijer’s initiative follows similar moves by other grocery retailers to incorporate trendy and nutritious items into their offerings. Last September, Kroger introduced a protein-focused extension to its Simple Truth line, while Sprouts Farmers Market unveiled Wellness Bowls, a high-protein and high-fiber grab-and-go meal option in its foodservice section. Associated Wholesale Grocers also recently added two specialty private brands: Wellwerks, featuring functional snacks, and Nüwerks, offering vitamins, protein powders, and nutraceuticals.

These efforts align with the USDA’s updated dietary guidelines, which emphasize the importance of prioritizing protein and avoiding heavily processed packaged foods.
