by amazonskylers

During 2025, PepsiCo used 2 million metric tons of plastic in its packaging, which was slightly less than the previous year. The company’s primary packaging saw a decrease in virgin materials usage compared to 2024, with more packaging incorporating recycled content.

Among PepsiCo’s packaging materials, fiber accounted for 34%, followed by PET plastic at 30%, glass at 10%, aluminum at 8%, flexible films at 5%, and the remaining categorized as “other.”

This marks PepsiCo’s second sustainability report since altering its packaging targets in May 2025, with a focus on achieving an average 2% year-over-year reduction in absolute tonnage of virgin plastics through 2030.

In 2025, the company reported a 6% reduction in virgin plastic usage, following a 5% reduction in 2024. The goal applies to primary packaging for company-owned brands, manufacturing operations, franchise bottlers, and certain joint ventures, accounting for an estimated 80% of PepsiCo’s total packaging footprint by weight.

PepsiCo’s progress towards using 40% or more recycled content in plastic packaging by 2035 saw an increase to 18% in 2025, up from 15% in 2024. The company highlighted initiatives such as transitioning beverage bottles to 100% rPET in Poland.

Another target involves achieving 97% or more reusable, recyclable, or compostable packaging by design by 2030. In 2025, PepsiCo reached 94%, with notable changes in various markets to enhance sustainability.

PepsiCo also outlined qualitative targets related to innovation in packaging material technologies and increasing recycling rates in key markets. The company supports well-designed EPR programs and is actively involved in initiatives promoting circular economy practices.
