Target to Offer Cereals Without Artificial Colors
Target has announced that by the end of May, they will only sell cereals that do not contain certified synthetic colors. This decision comes as part of a larger trend in the food industry to remove artificial ingredients from products.
The retailer has worked with national brands and suppliers to reformulate the cereals they carry, aligning with their standards set in 2019 with the launch of the Good & Gather private brand. This line of products is free from artificial flavors and sweeteners, synthetic colors, and high-fructose corn syrup.
Other retailers like Walmart and Save A Lot have also committed to removing artificial dyes and ingredients from their store brands in the coming years. Major food manufacturers such as General Mills and Nestlé are following suit by eliminating artificial colors from their products.
Target’s decision to remove synthetic colors from their cereal offerings is part of their strategy to provide a healthier and more curated grocery experience for their customers. Despite facing financial challenges, the retailer sees this move as a way to drive growth and meet consumer demands for healthier options.
Chief Merchandising Officer Cara Sylvester stated, “We know consumers are increasingly prioritizing healthier lifestyles, and we’re moving quickly to evolve our offerings to meet their needs.”
The Trump administration’s push for the food industry to transition away from synthetic colors has led to the approval of new color additives made from natural sources. Companies now have the flexibility to claim their products are free from artificial colors as long as they do not contain petroleum-based dyes.
