The acquisition news that has been making waves in the beverage industry is the purchase of organic food and plant-based drink maker SunOpta by Dutch beverage giant Refresco. This deal, valued at $1.1 billion, sees Refresco acquiring SunOpta for $6.50 per share in cash, with the transaction expected to close in the second quarter of 2026. This move not only implies an equity value of $829 million for SunOpta but also includes approximately $265.8 million of the company’s debt.

SunOpta, known for manufacturing plant-based beverages, broths, and fruit snacks for brands and private label offerings, will enhance Refresco’s presence in North America and provide opportunities for expansion into foodservice and other beverage categories, according to CEO Steve Presley.

Refresco, a privately-held company with production facilities across North America, Europe, and Australia, specializes in soft drinks, juices, ready-to-drink teas, and energy drinks. The addition of SunOpta to its portfolio will give Refresco a stronger foothold in the U.S. market and increase its offerings in the better-for-you snacks and beverages segment.

SunOpta, which had hinted at a potential sale a decade ago, has since focused on product innovation and divested its global ingredients business. In a recent move, the company announced a $25 million investment to expand its fruit snack business, showcasing its commitment to growth and diversification.

In its latest earnings report, SunOpta reported a nearly 17% growth in revenue year over year, reaching $205.4 million. CEO Brian Kocher highlighted the increasing demand from customers for additional capacity, prompting the company to invest in a new aseptic manufacturing line at its Texas facility to meet the growing needs of the market.
