Bakery Giants Flowers Foods and Bimbo Bakeries USA Announce Plant Closures

Flowers Foods and Bimbo Bakeries USA have announced the closure of several plants as part of their efforts to increase efficiencies and cut costs. Flowers Foods will be closing a bun making facility in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which produces Wonder, Tastykake, and Mrs. Freshley’s products. Production at the facility will cease between Sept. 18 and Oct. 1. The company plans to discontinue baking operations but will continue to service customers through its broader bakery warehouse network in Louisiana. Severance packages and job placement support services will be provided to affected employees.

Meanwhile, Bimbo Bakeries USA has announced the closure of three bakeries in the U.S., two in New York and one in San Antonio, Texas. Production at these facilities will transition to other locations better equipped to support future growth. The closures in New York will impact 131 workers.

Food and beverage producers have been adjusting their production capacity to meet demand and improve efficiency. Keurig Dr Pepper recently announced the closure of manufacturing plants in Virginia and Vermont, while also investing in a coffee roasting facility in South Carolina. Campbell Soup has also made changes to its manufacturing facilities to improve competitiveness in its supply chain.
