Convenient Snacking Trends: A Shift Towards Healthier Options

On-the-go snacking has become a popular choice for almost half (48%) of consumers globally, who consume over two snacks a day, according to a recent report from HealthFocus International. This shift in eating habits has led to a change in how people approach snacking and healthy eating in general.

Consumers now expect snacks to be just as healthy as their meal choices, prompting food manufacturers to be more mindful of the ingredients they use. The report found that people are looking for healthier options even in indulgent snack categories.

Younger consumers, in particular, believe that eating multiple healthy snacks throughout the day can be just as nutritious, if not better, than sticking to three traditional meals. This changing mindset has created a demand for snacks that are not only delicious but also nutritious.

The Rise of Clean Labels and Better-for-You Ingredients

Nearly half of consumers are now seeking out healthy snack options, with 45% prioritizing healthiness and 38% taking a more balanced approach by allowing indulgent snacks as part of a healthy diet. “Made with fruits and vegetables” is the third highest driver of snack selection globally, highlighting the growing demand for wholesome ingredients.

Brands like Cheerios Veggie Blends and Once Upon a Farm are incorporating fruits and vegetables into their products to cater to this trend. These brands are adding ingredients like sweet potato, carrot, and spinach powders, as well as fruit purees like banana and blueberry, to create nutritious snack options.

Clean label products are also on the rise in various categories, with consumers increasingly influenced by wholesome ingredients and plant-based innovations. Food manufacturers are responding to this trend by emphasizing “clean-label” and “better-for-you” ingredients in their products.
