Contrary to the name, lemon puppy chow is a snack made for humans! The name came about probably during the 1980’s because the Chocolate Puppy Chow version looks more like dog food than a snack. Over the years it has also been called Muddy Buddies.

Lemon Puppy Chow is made with your favorite Chex cereal with white chocolate and plenty of lemon for a sweet and citrusy treat.

Why You’ll Love Lemon Puppy Chow

  • Easy – It takes about 10 minutes from start to finish, and just simple easy to find ingredients!
  • No Bake – No oven required, just melting a little chocolate and stirring together.
  • Sweet & Tart – the perfect balance of sweet and tart, not overly sweet!

What You’ll Need

Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the post for the FULL PRINTABLE recipe card.

  • Chex Cereal – use your favorite. Corn or Rice Chex let the lemon flavor shine through the best.
  • Powdered Sugar
  • White Chocolate – white chocolate almond bark melts really well and works great.
  • Butter – I always use unsalted
  • Lemon Extract – see recipe notes for using lemon juice if you don’t have extract
  • Lemon Zest

How To Make Lemon Puppy Chow

  1. Melt Chocolate. In a microwave safe bowl melt together white chocolate and butter until smooth and completely melted. Stir in lemon extract.
  2. Mix Together. Pour white chocolate mixture over a bowl of Chex cereal and mix until well coated.
  3. Toss To Coat. In a zip top bag mix together powdered sugar and lemon zest. Pour in coated cereal, seal the bag, and toss to coat.
  4. Set Up. Spread the cereal onto a baking sheet and let it set up before storing and serving.

Recipe Tips & Suggestions

  • Don’t have lemon extract, no worries! Use 2 Tablespoons lemon juice instead and add 1/2 cup of powdered sugar since the mixture has more liquid.
  • Use whatever Chex cereal you enjoy. I think Rice and Corn Chex are best, as they are mild enough that the lemon flavor shines through.
  • White chocolate almond bark melts quickly and very smooth. I find it the easiest to work with. But you can use a melting bar of chocolate or even chocolate chips. Just melt at 50% power, and stir often so it melts smoothly.

Storage

Once the lemon muddy buddies have set up, store in an airtight container for 3-4 days. You can store them in the fridge, but it is not necessary.

Freezing – yes you can freeze muddy buddies. They will last for up to 3 months in an airtight container in the freezer.
