Frugalpac’s Paper Wine Bottles Now Available at Target Stores
A British company called Frugalpac has successfully launched its paper wine bottles at approximately 1,200 Target stores across the United States. These innovative fiber-based bottles, which are used to package Collective Good wines, are the result of a collaboration between Latitude Wines and Monterey Wine Co., both based in California.
Frugalpac CEO Malcolm Waugh announced that this nationwide rollout at Target is the first of its kind at a major U.S. retailer. While Bonny Doon Vineyards introduced the fiber bottles at select Whole Foods stores last year, this launch at Target marks a significant milestone for the company.
The Frugal Bottle, made from 94% recycled paper, is designed to offset 100 tons of carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional glass wine bottles. It is also easily recyclable in most parts of the U.S., with consumers simply needing to separate it from an internal food-grade polyethylene pouch.
Frugalpac’s Expansion in the U.S. Market
Currently, about 90% of Frugalpac’s business comes from exports, with the U.S. market showing the most promising growth. Waugh expressed his plans to continue expanding the availability of fiber wine bottles in retail locations across the country. In the near future, these bottles will also be stocked in over 500 7-Eleven stores, primarily on the West Coast.
While various alcoholic beverage companies have experimented with fiber-based bottles for products like beer, vodka, and whisky, Frugalpac’s Frugal Bottle stands out for its reduced carbon footprint and energy efficiency. Weighing only 83 grams, the Frugal Bottle is significantly lighter than traditional glass options, making it a more sustainable choice for packaging wine and spirits.
Innovative Design and Sustainable Practices
Frugalpac manufactures its paperboard bottles in England and partners with local companies like Monterey Wine to produce and distribute its products. By utilizing locally sourced materials, Frugalpac reduces its carbon footprint and minimizes shipping costs, an important consideration in light of current trade issues.
The unique design of the Frugal Bottle, resembling a traditional bag-in-box format, offers a familiar experience for consumers without compromising on sustainability. The innovative monomaterial PE pouch, which can be easily separated for recycling, ensures that the wine stays fresh for extended periods.
As Frugalpac continues to explore barrier technologies for further plastic reduction, the company remains committed to environmentally friendly practices. By prioritizing recyclability and sustainability, Frugalpac is paving the way for a more eco-friendly approach to beverage packaging.
