Ferrero Invests in U.S. Hazelnut Farming
Ferrero Hazelnut Company, a division of Ferrero Group, has recently made a significant investment of $340,000 to enhance hazelnut production in the United States. This investment is aimed at strengthening the hazelnut industry in the country and supporting local farmers and distributors.
The investment is being split between two prestigious universities, with Oregon State University receiving a grant of $180,000 and Rutgers University being awarded $160,000. The grants will facilitate collaboration between the universities and the hazelnut industry, as well as promote sustainability efforts within the sector.
Efforts to Diversify Hazelnut Sourcing
Ferrero’s decision to invest in hazelnut production in North America comes at a time when the demand for hazelnuts is high, especially during seasonal celebrations like the winter holidays. The company is focused on mastering the hazelnut value chain to deliver value to customers, brands, and products.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Willamette Valley accounts for 99% of U.S.-grown hazelnuts. Ferrero has been collaborating with Oregon State University for several years, and the latest grant will support projects aimed at improving hazelnut orchards in the region.
Rutgers University on the East Coast is also playing a crucial role in breeding hazelnut trees resistant to fungal diseases that affect hazelnut production in the region. This demonstrates Ferrero’s commitment to strengthening its hazelnut supply chain in North America.
Sustainability and Global Sourcing
Outside the U.S., Ferrero sources hazelnuts from various countries, including Italy, Chile, Turkey, France, and others. The company aims for full visibility across its hazelnut supply chain and has achieved 90% traceability of its sourced hazelnuts back to their origin.
With 37 manufacturing plants across five continents, Ferrero is a global leader in the confectionery industry. In the U.S., the company has manufacturing facilities in multiple states, emphasizing its commitment to sustainable sourcing and production practices.
