There’s an interesting story about how this BYU Creamery Ranch Dressing copycat recipe ended up on my blog! And some people who know me well might be surprised to see a recipe from BYU Creamery showing up here, because when Utah plays BYU every year in the biggest football rivalry in Utah, there’s no doubt about which school I’ll be cheering for, and it’s not BYU!
In my college days I graduated twice from the University of Utah, although quite a few people in my extended family have attended BYU. But it was actually my good friend Donna who introduced me to the delicious Ranch Dressing made by BYU Creamery. Donna raved about it on Facebook, and when I finally got some to try, I did absolutely love the mild but extra-creamy flavor of this version of Ranch Dressing that I soon discovered has almost a cult following in Utah.
After I heard about the dressing from Donna and shared it on our sibling group chat, it was my brother Mark and his wife Lisa who tracked down the dressing at Deseret Book and brought me some to sample. And then after I told my siblings how much I loved it, my sister Pam did some internet research and took a stab at the recipe. Then the fabulous Kara (my cooking assistant and Pam’s daughter) experimented with different variations of Pam’s recipe and tested them out on friends and family members to see which one people thought was best!
And one thing that ended up being a huge plus for all this experimenting besides the tasty Ranch Dressing we came up with is the fact that our recipe includes making enough of the dry Ranch Mix to make more than 15 batches of dressing, which is going to be a bonus for everyone who’s tired of spending money to buy the dried ranch packets at the store. Is the BYU Creamery Ranch Dressing Copycat Recipe low in carbs?
The standard serving size on a bottle of salad dressing is two tablespoons, and using that amount to calculate nutritional info, this creamy Ranch Dressing has only 1 net carb per serving! Even if you prefer much more than two tablespoons of dressing on your salad (like me) this is still extremely low in carbs and also perfect for Keto!
Adapt the copycat BYU Creamery Ranch Dressing to your own taste:
If there’s one thing I know about developing recipes, it’s that things really do taste different to different people! So when we were testing this recipe we tried three versions and had a few friends and family taste them and tell us which one they liked best. There were quite a few people who preferred one that had slightly more mayo than the recipe shown here; if you’re a big mayo fan or tend to like dressings that are heavy on the mayo, taste the dressing after you whisk it together and decide if you want to add 1/4 to 1/2 cup more mayo. There were also some people who liked a version that had slightly more Ranch Dressing Dry Mix in proportion to the other ingredients. Again, if you like Ranch Dressing with a strong herbal flavor, taste the version in this recipe and decide if you want to add another teaspoon (or more) of the dry mix.
How to Make BYU Creamy Ranch Dressing Copycat Recipe:

- First assemble coarse ground black pepper, dried parsley, garlic salt, garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt, and dried dill weed to make the BYU Ranch Dry Mix.
- Put those ingredients into a food processor and buzz until it’s well combined like you see in the photo.
- Put the Dry Ranch Mix into a glass container and label, and you’ll have enough to make about 15 bottles of dressing. (In a glass jar with a tight lid this will keep for months in the cupboard.)
- To make a batch of dressing, first put sour cream and one tablespoon and two teaspoons of the dry mix into a medium-sized bowl.
- Whisk until those two ingredients are all combined.
- Add the mayo and whisk again.
- Add the buttermilk and lemon juice and whisk again.
- Taste the dressing and decide if you want to add slightly more mayo (about 1/4 to 1//2 cup) or slightly more Dry Ranch Mix (about 1 teaspoon or a little more).
- I’m guessing the BYU Ranch Copycat Dressing will keep about 3 weeks in the fridge, although at my house so far it’s always been devoured much more quickly than that!

Instructions
- Assemble the coarse ground black pepper, dried parsley, garlic salt, garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt, and dried dill weed to make the Dry Mix.
- Put all ingredients into a food processor (or similar device such as a Magic Bullet) and buzz until it’s well combined.
- Put the BYU Ranch Dry Mix into a glass container and label the lid, and you’ll have enough to make about 15 bottles of dressing. In a glass jar with a tight lid, this will keep for months in the cupboard.
- To make a batch of dressing, start by putting the sour cream into a medium-sized plastic bowl with one tablespoon and two teaspoons of dry Ranch Mix.
- Whisk until the sour cream and dry Ranch Mix are all combined.
- Add the mayo and whisk again.
- Add the buttermilk and lemon juice and whisk again.
- Taste the dressing and decide if you want to add slightly more mayo or slightly more Dry Ranch Mix. If you’re adding more mayo, I’d start with 1/4 cup more, then taste and if you still want more add another 1/4 cup mayo. If you’re adding more Dry Ranch Mix I’d start with one teaspoon, taste, and then add just a bit more if you still want more herby flavors.
- I’m guessing this copycat BYU Creamery Ranch Dressing will keep about 3 weeks in the fridge, although so far at my house it’s been devoured much more quickly than that!
Notes
I used full-fat sour cream and full-fat mayo, and that’s what the nutritional information is based on. However, if you want a dressing with less fat you can definitely switch those out for reduced-fat sour cream and reduced-fat mayo.
