Have you noticed the trend of using turnips as a low-carb substitute for potatoes? I’ve developed a fondness for turnips myself, and these Air Fryer Turnip Fries were a successful new experiment! They were not only quick and easy to make with minimal carbs but also incredibly delicious!

We tried these turnip fries with various dipping sauces, but we found that they paired exceptionally well with our preferred Utah Fry Sauce! This mayo-ketchup blend is a staple at burger joints in Utah, so it’s no surprise that it complements these low-carb fries perfectly. Plus, we used sugar-free ketchup, keeping the carb count low even in the fry sauce!

With just a few ingredients, you can enjoy these Air Fryer Turnip Fries and fry sauce as a snack that I’m sure many low-carb enthusiasts will appreciate as a french fry alternative. I’ve calculated the nutritional information for four servings, and even if you indulge in double the amount, the carb content remains minimal! Pick up a couple of turnips on your next grocery run and give this recipe a shot!

What ingredients are required?

  • turnips
  • olive oil
  • Spike Seasoning (affiliate link), or other all-purpose seasoning blend
  • salt to taste
  • mayo
  • G. Hughes Sugar-Free Ketchup (affiliate link) or other sugar-free ketchup for “Utah Fry Sauce” with turnips

Tips for selecting flavorful turnips:

Not all turnips are created equal, and older or larger turnips can have a slightly bitter taste. To ensure a pleasant flavor, buy turnips from a store with a quick turnover and opt for smaller turnips.

Which Air Fryer did I use?

I’m a huge fan of the Cuisinart Convection Air Fryer Toaster Oven (affiliate link), which is my go-to air fryer. This model has a spacious basket that accommodates plenty of food, and I find it incredibly user-friendly. Plus, I appreciate the convenience of having a counter-worthy air fryer.

What is Utah Fry Sauce?

In Utah, nearly every fast-food establishment serves french fries with a condiment known as Fry Sauce. It’s even available in grocery stores in Utah! The basic fry sauce recipe is a mix of approximately 2 parts mayo to one part ketchup. Adjust the mayo-ketchup ratio to your liking; I prefer mine with a bit more mayo, as evident from the photo. While some restaurants add ingredients like dill pickle juice, barbecue sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika, I’m partial to the classic fry sauce made with just mayo and ketchup. And of course, I make mine with sugar-free ketchup (affiliate link).

What other dipping sauce options are available for the turnip fries?

While we relished the Utah Fry Sauce with our turnip fries, there are plenty of other tasty options to try. These fries would pair well with Sriracha Dipping Sauce, Remoulade Sauce, Red Pepper Aioli, Mustard-Herb Sauce, Southwestern Ranch Dip, or Tzatziki Sauce.

  3. Trim off the top and bottom of each turnip.
  4. Peel the skin off the turnip.

  9. I managed to fit all the fries in a single batch in my Air Fryer, but if your basket is smaller, you may need to cook them in two batches.
  10. Cook the turnip fries for 10 minutes, then remove the basket and carefully flip all the fries.
  11. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, then check and flip any fries that are browning too quickly.
  12. Continue cooking for about 2 more minutes, or until the turnip fries are nicely browned and cooked through.
  13. While the fries are cooking, mix together the Sugar-Free Ketchup and Mayo to create Utah Fry Sauce.
  14. Season the fries with salt to taste and serve hot.

Ingredients

  • 2 small sized turnips
  • 1 T olive oil
  • 1 tsp. Spike Seasoning (see notes)
  • salt to taste
  • 1/4 cup mayo
  • 2 T sugar-free ketchup

Instructions

  1. Choose two small turnips that look plump and firm.
  2. Preheat Air Fryer for 5 minutes at 375F/190C. (Some Air Fryers may not need to be reheated.)
  3. For easy peeling, start by cutting off the top and bottom of each turnip so it will sit flat.
  4. Then use a sharp knife to slice off the skin of the turnip all the way around.
  5. Keeping the turnip sitting flat, cut slices that are about 1/2 inch thick.
  6. Then cut those slices into fries that are about 1/2 inch wide.
  7. Put the cut fries into a bowl and toss with olive oil and Spike Seasoning (affiliate link), or other all-purpose seasoning blend.
  8. Spread fries out in the Air Fryer basket, carefully arranging them in a single layer.
  9. I fit all the fries in one batch in my Cuisinart Convection Air Fryer Toaster Oven (affiliate link) but if your Air Fryer basket is smaller you might have to cook them in two batches.
  10. Cook the turnip fries 10 minutes, then remove the basket and carefully turn all the fries.
  11. Cook the fries for 5 more minutes; then check and turn any that are getting too brown.
  12. Cook about 2 minutes more, or until the turnip fries are nicely browned and cooked through.
  13. While fries cook, stir together Sugar-Free Ketchup and Mayo to make Utah Fry Sauce. (We like more mayo than ketchup as you can see, adjust to the amount of ketchup you prefer.)
  14. Season finished fries with salt to taste and serve hot.

Notes

Use any all-purpose seasoning blend if you don’t have Spike.
